As with any other major installation, you should fix disk permissions before installing.
Many people have reported a problem with fonts. If an Office04 application is failing to open, try troubleshooting your fonts.

There have been a number of problems with the on-line registration site. MS has apparently acknowledged this and is working on a fix. Try again later, if you wish.
You should understand that registration is a marketing function for MS, nothing more. It doesn't constitute proof of purchase if you lose your disk, for example. You are given an opportunity to sign up for email newsletters and updates, however. The newsletter has some good stuff, so you may find it worth doing.
